About Us

Welcome to Thistledown Pottery

I make beautiful, useful pottery for everyday life — from favourite mugs and bowls to one-off pieces made for the people, places and occasions that matter.

Thistledown Pottery is a small, friendly studio where I get to be creative, make things by hand, continue to be inspired and learn the art of ceramics. Having the excuse to get really muddy and create as an adult never fails to bring me pleasure. Every piece is made with care and dexterity, from throwing and shaping the clay to glazing and firing.

I love the fact that something made in my little Bedfordshire studio can end up becoming part of someone's everyday life — a favourite mug, a special gift or perhaps even an heirloom to be passed down through the family.

Everything is made here in the UK, so buying from Thistledown Pottery means supporting a small independent business and, compared with mass-produced ceramics, your pot hasn't had quite such a long journey before it reaches your home.

Although you'll find plenty of domestic ceramics and homeware to choose from, anything is possible. I also love making commissions — from a plate to mark a wedding or new arrival, to a special birthday gift or a keepsake to remember a much-loved pet.

Our Values

We believe in slow, considered making. We use quality materials and traditional techniques and craftmanship to create pieces that are built to last.

Rooted in community

We support local suppliers where possible, share knowledge, and contribute to the creative communities around us.

Sustainability

In a throw away society it is so important to reduce our environmental impact and create pottery which could last a lifetime.

  • All the packaging we use is biodegradable/recyclable, occasionally I will recycle packaging from suppliers
  • Kiln firings use a significant amount of energy and are expensive to run, which is why we only fire full kilns. Finding a more sustainable power solution is something I'm passionate about. I haven't cracked it yet, but I'm working on it.
  • All scrap clay, trimmings, green-ware fails are recycled back into useable clay.

We are continually exploring ways to reduce our environmental impact. Sustainability is a journey, and we're committed to improving every year.
